Auracast – further feedback

INITIAL UPDATE:
Connected one Auracast dongle to my work PC and the other to my home TV.

– I’m not a techy but know my way around and eventually I got them both to work. The instructions are ok but with both the PC and TV, you have to go onto other settings that are not mentioned to get them to work. I think non-techy people will have problems and give up. This might improve when the dongles are Auracast only and not Auracast and Bluetooth like the ones I have.

On the PC, I had to go into control panel to make the dongle the default receiver – doesn’t tell you to do this.

On the TV, navigating the app settings, for some, are going to be confusing, but there is a link to the TV make which I recommend as its clearer when navigating the TV settings. Once I got it to work, I could hear the telly but no one else could. I had to find another setting on my TV settings that allowed everyone to hear and me to stream. This is missing on the Avantree instructions.

– When streaming this morning on a teams call, I can change the volume by the app but also using the PC volume – not sure if that’s a problems but not sure what the PC one is doing – the volume gains are much more on the app  – there was some popping/crackling/fuzzing throughout the meeting in my aids, but only now and again. All in all, it did seem clearer as I found myself altering the streaming equalizer on the app.

– I am finding that although I am connected to the Auracast dongle at work – if I join a meeting or new meeting, I get no sound – so I have to disconnect then re-connect for it to work or wait for the meeting to start and then access my app  – again, not sure if that’s normal or I haven’t quite got the settings right – let me work on this over the next few weeks and see if this is the same at home.

– Will check in in few weeks. By the way, you mentioned that after the update, it would make a difference to the hearing quality – can you expand on this, so I am clear what I should be listening for? At the moment everything seems softer – wondering if this is what you meant.

SECOND UPDATE

“Auracast connected to my work PC – mainly used for Teams!

– Connection continues to be seamless and sound quality good – very little fuzzing or crackling whist streaming during the meeting. The only slight issue is there is no confirmation that you are connected. You have to wait for someone to talk. When I connect with the connectclip, it played a little sound in your aids as you connected so you knew you were live, so to speak.

– Connection is lost if you leave one meeting and start another – and you forget to disconnect or close; this caused the phone to lose the connection to the dongle.

First time I didn’t know what to do but by pulling the dongle out of the PC and re inserting, it seems to correct itself. Basically you have to connect and disconnect for all different teams meetings – again, with the connectclip you always seemed to be connected.

– If someone starts another meeting whilst you are in a meeting, the aids loose connection for about 5/10 seconds. Same, if someone rings you on the phone, even if you cancel the call, you lose connection for up to 10 seconds.

Having said all that, I’m much happier with the Auracast than the old connectclip – the above is just knowledge you can warn other people about.

Although the other day when I was having one of the above issues, I just defaulted to having the Teams meet on my phone where my aids are just paired with the iPhone like normal. This always works great, but the problem is you can’t see what anyone is sharing. I was sat in front of my PC, so I just stay with iPhone audio or reconnect to the PC. I stayed with audio on my phone which meant I spoke through the iPhone microphone and streamed to my aids but could see the meeting on my PC. This was interesting and worked perfectly well. The interesting bit with this is you don’t actually need either the old connectclip or Auracast to stream to your aids via PC in this sense.

Not used the Auracast TV dongle that much yet so will continue to assess – something doesn’t feel right with it. I think it’s because as well as streaming to my aids the sound is still coming out of the TV so other people can watch. I think the difference is the streaming sound when wearing in the ear aids versus the type I have with the Intent. As it sounded much different with my old in-the-ear Oticon’s via TV streaming.
